Yesterday I posted an introduction to portfolios in general. Today, with the second part on E-Portfolios, I want to start highlighting the differences and advantages of E-Portfolios as a portfolio tool.

What can E-Portfolios do?
E-Portfolios are especially effective because of their broad capabilities in encouraging student engagement, enabling assessment, and technical flexibility. Students become personally engaged with their own work because creating the portfolio forces them to organize and maintain their work. Students gain a broad perspective of their work as a collection, rather than just focusing on individual artifacts. Portfolios are also organized in order to be shared with others. E-Portfolios allow students to customize what and how artifacts are shared according to their audience. This provides a sense of ownership of student work as a reflection of themselves and more than just an assignment.

Yes, everything you say, so far, is right. However, in order to make the e-Portfolio truly learner-owned it must be capable of portability and thus not institutionally hosted. Secondly, the sharing with others is for the purposes of collaboration with and peer review by selected audiences. The e-Portfolio system therefore needs to be secure and e-safe.
